Voodoo Butterfly Release

Voodoo Butterfly MEDIUM

Almost six years ago, while visiting New Orleans with my family, I dreamed about a woman who had the power to change evil people good. In that dream, I also envisioned a plague of monarch butterflies descending upon Saint Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. Millions of the orange and black winged creatures swirled in the air and covered the entire cathedral. The dream woke me and would not let me fall back asleep, so in the middle of the night I jotted it down in my journal.

Then in 2009, when I decided to quit my teaching job in order to stay home with my growing family, I also decided to bring that butterfly dream to life. I’d always wanted to write a novel and, as a stay at home mom, I craved creative expression. So I pulled out my journal and committed to writing 15 minutes per day, which was all that I could afford with all of my family and household activities.

In the course of a year, I wrote my first draft. Over the next four years, I joined a critique group, revised, submitted the novel to New York City agents and editors, learned everything I could about writing and publishing, became a finalist in a national writing competition, and signed a publishing contract. During this five year journey, I also lived a normal, happy life: we had two babies, moved three times, my husband got a new job, and we grew as a family does.

Today my dream takes flight…

Voodoo Butterfly

Millions of monarch butterflies descend upon the city of New Orleans. They swarm Saint Louis Cathedral where a voodoo queen lies in a casket.

Twenty-five-year-old Sophie Nouveau fights her way through the plagued streets, desperate to get to that funeral.
When Sophie inherits her grandmother’s voodoo shop she knows nothing about voodoo. Or her family’s history of Mind Changers who have the power to change evil people good.

Her first day at the shop, Sophie receives a death threat. Someone, it seems, doesn’t want her in the city.
Sophie realizes if she wants to protect herself and her business, she’s going to need the help of her two employees. Feisty Poppy, descendent of the famous Marie Laveau, teaches Sophie the ways of voodoo. And confidant Taj introduces Sophie to the strange, eclectic city of New Orleans. Sophie develops feelings for Taj, but finds herself distracted by local legend Jacques, who may not be the dapper gentleman he makes himself out to be.

Tipped off by her grandma’s ghost, Sophie realizes her mind changing spell’s been missing one magic ingredient: true love. If Sophie cannot experience transformative love, she cannot make her spell work, and she cannot fight back when confronted by the one who wants her dead.
